Facilities

At Columbia College, students learn, practice, create, paint, film, record, dance, perform, and present in state-of-the-art facilities throughout our historic campus. They also live in attractive and modern accommodations--the very height of city living.

A sampling of our facilities:

Anchor Graphics
Anchor Graphics is a not-for-profit fine art printshop that brings together, under professional guidance, a diverse community of youth, emerging and established artists, and the public to advance the fine art of printmaking by integrating education with the creation of prints.

Audio Arts & Sound Facilities
Four studios, a wireless psychoacoustics sound system design classroom (a combination classroom and listening environment); a digital production lab; a reverb chamber (made from a converted bank vault!); and loads of sophisticated equipment offer hands-on exploration and production.  More...

Concert Halls
In addition to individual, small-ensemble, practice rooms, the Music Center facilities at 1014 South Michigan Avenue, feature a 125-seat concert hall with state-of-the-art digital sound-recording and amplification capabilities. Student and guest recitals, which are open to the public, are held in the concert hall.

Dance Facilities
The Dance Center of Columbia, at 1306 South Michigan Avenue, has presented more than 240 internationally recognized dance companies since its inception more that 40 years ago. Today, befitting its reputation as the Midwest's foremost presenter of contemporary dance, the Dance Center boast a 275-seat, state-of-the-art performance space devoted to dance productions, as well as smaller practice and rehearsal studios where students - as well as faculty and guest artists - present their work.

Film Facilities
As the largest film department in the world, Columbia's film department offers a wide range of equipment: in animation, you'll find sophisticated workstations running state-of-the-art software; in cinematography, two stages and a 50- by 70-foot teaching space with a lighting catwalk offering access to an extensive lighting grid; the new Film Row Center Theater; and more.

Galleries
Columbia supports a museum and seven galleries, three of them devoted exclusively to student work. At any given time, our venues are buzzing with activity and ideas. More about our galleries and museum...

Library
Located on Michigan Avenue, The Columbia College Library offers more than 230,000 books, 1,200 journals and magazines, and 85 electronic databases. The Digital and Media Services Department offers 16,000 films, videos, and DVDs. More about Columbia's library...

Photography
Among most extensive and advanced in the Midwest, Columbia's photography facilities include the Digital Imaging Lab, which offers more than 120 workstations, highly sophisticated scanning equipment, and an assortment of large-format printers; two studios with an extensive array of professional lighting equipment; and darkrooms with more than 150 enlarging stations - all of them staffed with managers and student workers. Residences
You won't find any dorms on this campus. You will, however, find some of the most innovative student housing in the country. Among the options: University Center, a one-of-a-kind community in downtown Chicago that houses students from three institutions and 731 South Plymouth Court, which offers apartment-style units. Smart Classrooms
Smart classrooms at Columbia let students and faculty alike express themselves. Specially wired for audiovisual presentations and information sharing, these spaces are as flexible and engaging as you are.

Theater Spaces
Aspiring actors and directors, costume and lighting designers, playwrights and sound engineers at Columbia have a variety of venues to display their talents - ranging from small, intimate theaters to classic, mid-sized theaters in architecturally rich settings.

Class projects are often staged in the 60-seat, black box, Classic Studio at 72 East 11th Street, which includes a 12-channel light board, 20 instruments and digital sound system, amplifier, and speakers. In the basement of the building there is the New Studio, which showcases directing projects, as well as larger-scale music presentations, senior vocal recitals, instrumental demonstrations, and lectures. This space has flexible seating for 40 to 70 people and is fully equipped for lighting and sound capabilities.

The art deco Getz Theater, which is located at 62 East 11th Street, seats up to 385 and features a modified thrust stage with a proscenium opening. Student talent is showcased in the Getz'  three mainstage shows per school year: a play, a musical, and a concert.
